The reaction of [Mo(CO)<sub>2</sub>(η-C<sub>4</sub>Ph<sub>4</sub>CO)<sub>2</sub>] with phenylacetylene gave [Mo(CO)(η-C<sub>4</sub>Ph<sub>4</sub>CO)(η<sup>6</sup>-2,3,6-C<sub>4</sub>H<sub>2</sub>Ph<sub>2</sub>CCHPh)], in which [2 + 2 + 1] cyclotrimerization of three alkyne molecules to give a fulvene ligand has occurred
