<p>Estimated litter input showed a tendency to increase with temperature regardless of dominating tree species and was highest for mature and old forest. Spruce-dominated forest showed the highest estimates of litter input. The figure includes litter from living trees, ground vegetation, and natural mortality. The estimated mean annual litter input (m-2) across all forest types was 0.195 kg C (carbon) (excluding harvest residues) and 0.221 kg C (including harvest residues). “Spruce forest”, “Pine forest” and “Deciduous forest” comprise plots where the respective tree species dominate. Lines are standard smooth functions in R (type = smooth, span = 0.5) for mature and old forest (full line) and young forest (broken line).</p
