The development of efficient, structured, and maintainable high-performance computing and networking applications is key to the success of many industrial high-performance computing system users and software houses. Recognizing this, the European Commission tasked Smith System Engineering and the University of Southampton's Parallel Applications Centre to conduct a survey of HPCN tools. The survey had two main objectives: ~ to assess the status of Europe's HPCN software tools, and ~ examine the market forces that contribute to the success of those tools. The survey results could be used to ascertain how best to meet end-user requirements when supporting software development and to give the EC an idea of the state of software being developed...
