Indigenous affairs minister Senator Amanda Vanstone showed a surprising and welcome official openness to indigenous experience abroad. She told the National Reconciliation Workshop, "The experience and the length of contact [in USA and Canada] between Indigenous people and Western society is different in many respects from the Australian experience. But we can learn from them and we shouldn't forget that they can learn from us. Our new conversation needs to include these other countries. We should be open to new ideas.
