This paper examines some of the issues involved in developing an industrial strength hypermedia application for use across a manufacturing enterprise. In order to meet this objective, a range of topics need to be addressed, including the user interface, application authoring and portability of information, revision control, and communicating with external resources. These principles are discussed with reference to previous work at Southampton, namely the hypermedia application developed for Pirelli Cables, Aberdare
