The living, chain-growth polymerization of (hetero)aryl monomers by carbene-ligated palladium precatalysts gives conjugated polymers with narrow dispersities as well as specified molecular weights and sequences. Despite this success, the mechanism for Pd precatalyst initiation and subsequent polymer growth is unknown.
