El aceite esencial obtenido por hidrodestilación de los vástagos frescos de Myrcia splendens se estudió mediante el análisis de Cromatografía de Gases- Espectrometría de Masas. El rendimiento del aceite fue 0,15%, del cual se identificaron 18 sesquiterpenos que constituyen el 97,2% del aceite. Los tres compuestos mayoritarios fueron: germacreno-D (25,3%), ranscariofileno (23,8%) y óxido de cariofileno (10,5%). Este aceite inhibió el desarrollo bacteriano de todas las cepas grampositivas y la mayoría de las bacterias gramnegativas estudiadas con CIM de 64 y 32 μg/ml, respectivamente.
