Determination of oxidative stress by means of lipid peroxidation in human crystalline lens with cataracts

El desbalance entre la producción de radicales libres y antioxidantes es conocido como estrés oxidativo, el predominio de radicales libres daña las estructuras biológicas. Objetivos: Determinar la existencia del estrés oxidativo en cristalinos con cataratas, relacionándolo con edad, sexo, dieta, consumo de vitaminas, tabaco y otras patologías sistémicas. Metodología: Se utilizó una muestra de 30 cristalinos, seleccionados aleatoriamente de pacientes operados en el Centro Ambulatorio Médico Integral de la Universidad de Los Andes. Estas muestras fueron sometidas a la técnica de determinación del malondialdehído con ácido tiobarbitúrico. Los datos fueron sometidos a un análisis de varianza y al test de Tukey de comparación múltiple aplicando un nivel de significación de 0.05. Resultados: En el 83.3% de las muestras se obtuvieron valores, que van de 0.036 a 1.097 nanomoles de malondialdehído sobre gramos de proteínas de cristalino, el 48% consumía vitaminas, 68% tenía otras patologías sistémicas, el 96% consumía frutas, el 89.3% consumía vegetales y el 8% fumaba. Conclusiones: Se comprobó la existencia del estrés oxidativo en la mayoría de los pacientes y se demostró la relación existente entre las variables estudiadas con los niveles del estrés oxidativo. Objectives: To determine the existence of the oxidative stress in crystalline with cataracts by the quantification of lipid peroxidation, to relate it to age, sex, diet, vitamin consumption of vitamin, smoking and other systemic pathologies. Methodology: Sample of 30 crystalline lens was used, selected random from patients operated at the Ambulatory Integral Medical Center of the University of The Andes. These samples were subjected to technique of determination of malondialdehyde with the thiobarbituric acid. The means were subjected to the analysis of variance and the Tukey test of multiple comparations using a signification level of 0.05. Results: 83.3% of samples had values between 0.036 and 1.097 malondialdehyde nanomoles per gram of crystalline proteins, 48% consumed vitamins, 68% had other systemic pathologies, 96% consumed fruits, 89.3% consumed vegetables and 8% were smokers. Conclusions: the existence of oxidative stress in most patients was verified, and it was shown the relationship between the oxidative stress and the studied variables.
