Use and application of forest growth simulators for silvicultural decision making

Normalmente, el estudio de los bosques se realiza sobre la base de información descrita en tablas y gráficos de distintos tipos, sin embargo, la posibilidad de apreciar y analizar visualmente los rodales a través de herramientas computacionales puede ayudar en la toma de decisiones. El objetivo del presente trabajo es presentar un ejemplo de aplicación de un modelo de crecimiento forestal para bosques irregulares y mixtos del estado de Durango, México. Este modelo ha sido incorporado en el programa computacional BWINPro7, el cual permite simular el crecimiento de árboles individuales y el desarrollo de estrategias silvícolas y puede ser usado en combinación con datos de parcelas permanentes en la estimación del crecimiento futuro, aplicación de cortas y la cuantificación de la cosecha de los rodales. Además, el simulador brinda la posibilidad de apreciar y analizar visualmente los rodales permitiendo observar la distribución espacial de los árboles que conforman el rodal, lo cual aumenta el nivel de detalle del análisis. En virtud de las bondades mostradas, este simulador se ha convertido en una herramienta importante para la planificación forestal sostenible en la región al brindar la posibilidad de simular y visualizar diferentes escenarios silvícolas.33-52bvargas@itf.edu.mxsemestralTraditionally, the study of forests has been done on the basis of information described in a variety of tables and graphs, however, the possibility for evaluating and analyzing the stands visually by means of computational tools can help in decision making. The goal of this paper is to present the application of a growth model for the uneven aged and mixed forests in Durango, Mexico. The growth model has been included in computational software BWINPro7, which allows the simulation of individual tree growth and the development of silvicultural regimes, and can use data of permanent sample plots to predict future yield growth information. Moreover, it helps to define harvest planning and to calculate the allowable cut. It also offers the possibility for evaluating and analyzing the stands visually, permitting the description of the spatial distribution of the trees within the stand, which increases the level of detail in the analysis. The forest growth simulator presented in this article has become an important management tool, in the sustainable timber planning of the region, because it offers the opportunity of simulating and analyzing different silvicultural alternatives
