Treatment of transverse fracture of third metatarsal bone in a foal using internal fixation techique

Fracturas del hueso tercer metacarpiano o metatarsiano pueden ocurrir en los equinos de cualquier raza y edad. Dichos huesos son particularmente susceptibles a fracturas debido a su localización distal y el hecho de que están recubiertos con muy poco tejido blando. En el presente trabajo se reportan los hallazgos clínicos, el tratamiento quirúrgico, la evolución clínica y el manejo médico post-quirúrgico de un caso de fractura completa del tercer metatarsiano en un potro Cuarto De Milla Americano referido a la Clínica Veterinaria “Dr. Luis Medina”. La historia, sintomatología clínica y radiología orientaron el diagnóstico. La resolución del caso fue a través de osteosíntesis usando dos platinas de compresión dinámica. La evolución clínica fue evaluada por el grado de claudicación y el progreso de la cicatrización de la fractura mediante control radiográfico semanal. In this paper was reported the clinical signs, clinical diagnosis, surgical treatment, clinical evolution and the post-surgical handling of a case of transverse fracture of the third metatarsal bone in an American Quarter Horse foal referred to the Veterinary Clinic “Dr. Luís Medina”. The history, clinical signs and radiology guided the diagnose, the resolution of the case was through internal fixation using two dynamic compression plate. The clinical evolution was evaluated by the degree of lameness and the control of fracture healing by weekly radiology evaluation.
