<p>Primary endosymbiosis (PE) gave rise to the Archaeplastida comprising red algae, green algae and glaucophytes. Following the divergence of main eukaryotic lineages, secondary (SE) or tertiary endosymbiosis (TE) events equipped the ancestors of CASH taxa (cryptophytes, alveolates, stramenopiles and haptophytes) with photosynthetic capabilities.
