El caimán del Orinoco Crocodylus intermedius habitaba en la cuenca del Río Orinoco de Venezuela y Colombia, el caimán de la costa Crocodylus acutus a lo largo de la costa, lagos, lagunas y ríos afluentes del Mar Caribe. Después de la cacería comercial a principios y mediados del siglo XX, quedó el caimán del Orinoco en estado crítico y en peligro de extinción; el caimán de la costa como una especie amenazada. En la década de los ochenta, comenzaron programas de recuperación de ambas especies por medio del censaje, monitoreo de poblaciones silvestres, protección de las habitas, programas de cría en cautiverio para futuras liberaciones y recuperación de sus poblaciones.
