We present some instructions for making a safe source of beta radiation using potassium chloride (KCl). This can then be used for testing the operation of your CERN@school Timepix detector and doing some basic analysis with the Pixelman particle counting software. Instructions are provided within.

To find out more about taking part in authentic research with the CERN@school programme, please visit:

http://researchinschools.org/CERN

CERN@school was supported by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) via grant numbers ST/J000256/1 and ST/N00101X/1, as well as a Special Award from the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851.</i
