Changes in the Motatan River delta related to human influence. Northwest of Venezuela - Trujillo State

El río Motatán desemboca en la costa suroriental del lago de Maracaibo, en el noroeste de Venezuela, estado Trujillo; junto con otros ríos ha construido un delta holocénico que modifica la línea costera. En los últimos 50 años se observa que la sedimentación se ha reactivado en la desembocadura de este río, lo cual ha originado la formación de un lóbulo deltaico nuevo. En este trabajo se analiza la evolución geomorfológica de este lóbulo en el período 1967-1996. La metodología consistió en la revisión bibliográfica, análisis cartográfico y aerofotogramétrico de misiones de los años 1967, 1977, 1988 y 1996. Los resultados indican que el lóbulo deltaico mostró un crecimiento acelerado en los primeros 10 años, para luego disminuir hasta tasas negativas; así mismo, se observaron cambios en la longitud y dirección del cauce distributario principal. Las causas parecen ser de origen antrópico, relacionadas con la canalización del río en su parte terminal y represamiento 50 Km aguas arriba de la desembocadura.85-92carturo7982@yahoo.eshenrypacheco2005@yahoo.essemestralThe Motatán river flows into the southeast coast of the Maracaibo Lake, Northwest of Venezuela, Trujillo state; together with other rivers it has constructed a Holocene delta that modifies the coastal line. In the last 50 years, revival of the sedimentation is observed in the mouth of the Motatán, which caused the formation of a new deltaic lobe. In this work, the geomorphologic evolution of this lobe in the 1967-1996 period was analyzed. The methodology consisted of the bibliographical review, cartographic analysis and aerial photographic of missions of 1967, 1977, 1988 and 1996. The results indicate that the deltaic lobe showed an accelerated growth in the first 10 years, to subsequently diminish to negative rates, likewise, changes in the length and direction of the main distributary channel river were observed. The reason seems to be related to human influence: the canalization of the river at the final part and a damming 50 Km up-stream from the mouth
