<div><p>Background</p><p>Biofilm formation by <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> is an important virulence attribute because of its potential to induce persistent antibiotic resistance, retard phagocytosis and either attenuate or promote inflammation, depending upon the disease syndrome, <i>in vivo</i>.
