Comparison of microbiota profiles in NEC and control infants subgrouped by mode of delivery. Observed species (operational taxonomic unit, OTU) richness (a) and Shannon diversity index (SDI) values (b) in cases and controls are subgrouped by mode of delivery: cesarean section (C-sec) or vaginal (Vag) delivery. Data is represented in box and whisker plots with median and whiskers representing 10–90th centiles. We observed significant differences in OTUs and SDI between controls delivered by C-section vs. vaginal delivery (*p < 0.05) and controls delivered by C-section vs. NEC infants delivered by vaginal delivery (**p <0.05).
