Accumulating evidence supports the importance of leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion molecule (CAM) expression as an initiating process in tissue inflammation. To investigate the relevance of CAM expression to allergic airways inflammation, nasal biopsies from patients with perennial allergic rhinitis (n = 8) and from nonatopic healthy volunteers (n = 8) were immunostained with monoclonal antibodies directed against the CAMs, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (ELAM-1), and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1).
