Water distribution networks will need to evolve to meet the future challenges of population growth, climate change, aging infrastructure and ever increasing customer expectations. Part of this evolution will be the use of smarter systems to manage the network based on advanced data analytics. This paper presents a new system for automatically detecting abnormal events that occur in water networks and automatically reporting alarms back to the operators. The system makes use of existing flow data, without the need for new hardware or changes to the logging frequency of flow data. The paper presents the development of the system and examples from a case study with Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water.<br
