In this paper, the theoretical base of the covariance approach for generating random phase screens is analyzed, and corresponding computer program is compiled. Preliminary numerical simulation investigation of this new approach is carried out. We propose to use three methods to evaluate the generated phase screens in a combining way. It is found that a comparison of the phase structure function of generated phase screens with the theoretical one is not enough and often inefficient. Open loop results and close loop results by using phase screens generated by the covariance approach are obtained and compared with those by using phase screens generated by the spectral approach for the first time within our knowledge.
