Imitations of sounds as evidence: the constructions of imitatives in the Finnish language This dissertation examines the meanings and uses of Finnish imitatives (onomatopoeic interjections, e.g. humps, räks, poks, fruuum, pfhiuuu; sound of soft falling , crack , snap etc.) in written texts. Imitatives are indeclinable, onomatopoeic words used as imagistic representations of sounds, movements or other sensations. They have been studied very little in Finnish and in many other languages, as they have been considered marginal and only resources of spoken genres.
