In the last decades the prevalence of diabetes has increased dramatically. Diabetes is a complex disease often subdivided into type 1 diabetes, characterized by autoimmune destruction of the insulin-producing beta-cells, and type 2 diabetes, characterized by insulin resistance and some degree of reduced insulin secretion. However, type 1 diabetes-associated autoantibodies are present in up to 11% of European patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
