[Introduction]. In Sweden, the EU-sceptic politicians and parties advanced in the European Parliament elections in early October this year. The turn-out was very low by Swedish standards, 41%, which indicates a lack of interest among the general public. The public-opinion ratings have gone down in the course of the year and now, in autumn, only one out of five Swedes believes that the membership of the EU is beneficial for Sweden. In Austria, the opinion polls have demonstrated frustration with the European Union and, if there were a referendum now, the majority would most likely reject membership.
