This article considers the spread of English around the world in general and the East Asia region in particular. It explores the growing phenomenon of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) in the East Asian region, and describes the kinds of features, processes and strategies, especially accommodation and code-switching, that are emerging in research as typical of ELF use. It discusses some of the more negative responses to ELF and the ways in which these kinds of attitudes both influence, and are influenced by, the (still) prevailing standard (English) language ideology, but ends optimistically by noting that younger East Asians tend to be more positively oriented towards developments in ELF
