This study concerns women who experienced the anti-Communist violence of 1965-66 in West Sumatra, Indonesia. It makes an important contribution to the understanding of resilience in a non-western society and also presents new insights into the impacts of the events of 1965-66 on one part of the Indonesian community. Its approach that combines narrative ethnography, the study of resilience, and historical study can serve as a model for future work that seeks to understand historical events from a new perspective.<br /
