In this paper is shown some examples of the use of optimization techniques in the current design of building structures. The examples include the different phases of the design, namely, the modelling. the dimensioning and the constructional phases. Although several optimization procedures exist here only the very well known Descent Steepest Gradient is used. From the use of these optimization techniques some design rules can be drawn. In a near future it is foreseen that the application of these optimization methods to the practical design will be standard
