Academic use of the internet in Turkish universities

To fulfil the objectives of this study the survey method has been used. For the theoretical part a current literature review was made and for the case study data were collected via a questionaire. In addition, networked information resources were also reviewed and used. Four of the major Turkish universities in Ankara; ODTÜ, Hacettepe University, Ankara University and Gazi University, were selected as sample ( research area) for the questionaire. The Questionaire was applied to the 200 academicians in these universities. These 200 academics from selected universities represent the total population due to PPS (Probability Proposition to Size ) sample method. Findings of the study suggest that academicians use the Internet extensively as a way of approaching to the research process. The Internet helps academics to keep up-to-date with recent developments in their areas of interest. It provides wider and more frequent communication with colleagues and collaborators which has also led them to new directions in research. Academicians' research activities have also been influenced by access to online information systems and databases accessible via the Internet. Increased access to resources, new applications of the Internet such as Distance Education, electronic access to library resources and services, influenced the quality of their research as well as their educational activities
