This article uses material in Croat, Hungarian and German to analyse the attitude(s) of the Habsburg elite towards the controversial Yugoslav question in the course of the First World War. It reveals the 'sticking points' which made a coherent solution impossible and shows why the Yugoslav ideal was able to gain ground by 1917-18 in particular, with new national elites securing influence. The degree to which the South Slav problem became a Hungarian problem is especially emphasized
