A review of research on materialism among children and adolescents in Hong Kong

Studies on materialism amongst children and adolescents (aged 6 to 24 years) in Hong Kong were reviewed. A total of 31 studies were found in the international and local databases as well as on the Internet. These studies were categorized and summarized into six areas: children and adolescents’ attitudes to material possessions, outcomes of materialism, antecedents for materialism, materialist and post-materialist values, assessment of materialism in the Chinese context, and curriculum framework on money literacy. Based on the review, several research gaps were identified. The review showed that there is a general lack of conceptual studies, culturally appropriate and validated scales, criteria that could be used to evaluate the quality of qualitative research, and intervention programs.
