A understanding of metal flow within the die cavity is of particular importance in the control of quality of pressure diecastings. A computational fluid dynamics technique named SMAC (Simplified Mark and Cell) was adapted and modified to analyze the metal flow pattern during the filling stage of a die cavity. The flow pattern and hence the pattern of air-entrapment are found to be sensitive to the cavity wall thickness. Flow-visualization experiments were carried out to verify the validity of the computer simulation for a rectangular-plate cavity with either a straight gate or a fan gate. There is a good agreement between the predicted flow and the results from water-analogue experiments.Department of Industrial and Systems Engineerin
