The various types of optical fibres tailored for specific applications are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on rare-earth-doped fibres for use in fibre lasers and amplifiers. Fibre lasers have potential as well-controlled, quiet sources for telecommunications and sensors, while the erbium-doped fibre amplifier is already well-established as a low-noise, polarisation-insensitive repeater
