This paper, situated at the intersection between the philosophy of science, philosophy of language and epistemology, considers the role of the concept of fiction in science. It aims to explore the main problem that is addressed by this concept, the reference of scientific representations, particularly in contemporary debates about the construction and the function of models in science (Morgan and Morrison 1999, Suarez 2009), and to examine the tenability of the concept for this purpose. Although there is a substantial and growing body of literature on the role of fiction in science, to date there is little analysis on the variety of uses that concern this concept and almost none that actually considers parallel and paradigmatic discussions ...
