Written sources, Archaeological Record, African History: possible pathways to a comparative method

The aim of this paper is to present some aspects of a comparative methodology that deals with three main themes: Ancient written sources, Archaeological record and some cases studied in African History. This comparative method tries to reach some historical explanations of the representations of Tartessos in those written sources, as well as in the archaeological processes known in some regions of the Southwestern Iberia. Analyzing historical episodes like the Portuguese presence in Angola, it’s possible to create a questionnaire for some situations represented in ancient texts and for the archaeological record. The first, and perhaps more important, aspect is the deconstruction of territorial perceptions among the resident communities by the colonial power. This deconstruction (or violent process) implied a reorganization of the resident communities, and created new identities and changes in material culture. Processes of this type can be identified in the ancient written sources.Pretende-se, com este artigo, apresentar alguns aspectos de uma metodologia comparativa que incide sobre três temas: fontes escritas antigas, registo arqueológico e alguns casos estudados no âmbito da História de África. Este método comparativo procura apresentar algumas explicações históricas para as representações de Tartessos nessas fontes escritas, do mesmo modo que para os processos arqueológicos reconhecidos em várias regiões no Sudoeste da Península Ibérica. Analisando episódios históricos como a presença portuguesa em Angola, é possível criar um questionário para algumas situações vertidas para os textos e para o registo arqueológico. O primeiro, e talvez o mais importante, aspecto é a desconstrução das percepções territoriais das comunidades residentes por parte do poder colonial. Esta desconstrução (ou processo violento) implicou uma reorganização das comunidades residentes, criando novas identidades e mudanças na cultura material. Processos deste tipo podem ser identificados nas fontes escritas antigas.
