Subduction zones play an important role in the dynamics of the Earth. At plate margins, where one tectonic plate subsides underneath a second one, mountain ranges are built, earthquakes experienced and volcanic activity observed. The subduction zone of South America, where the Nazca Plate slides underneath the South American Plate, extends for roughly 7000 km along the plate margin. Ongoing since at least the Cretaceous this subduction zone is a laboratory for tectonic systems.
