Objective To examine the annual incidence of acute whiplash injuries after road traffic crashes in a geographic catchment area in Northern Sweden during the period 2000-2009. Design Descriptive epidemiology determined by prospectively collected data from a defined population. Setting The study was conducted at a public hospital in Sweden. Participants The population of the hospital's catchment area (136,600 inhabitants in 1999 and 144,500 in 2009). Methods At the emergency department, all injured persons (approximately 11,000 per year) were asked to answer a questionnaire about the injury incident.
