Within the scope of this thesis the investigation of the high pressure - high temperature behaviour of selected inorganic oxides and fluorides by means of 'large volume' presses (specifically piston-cylinder, belt and multi-anvil presses) provided the main area of focus. A principal aim has been to locate new high-pressure modifications that are quenchable to ambient conditions, where they may persist in a metastable state and allow for ex-situ analysis (e.g. crystal structure determination). In particular, oxides and fluorides of the heavier group 14-15 elements with the latter bearing stereochemically active lone electron pairs, are of interest, since many of them remain largely unexplored at high pressure - high temperature conditions,...
