Beta-NiAl als intermetallische Verbindung hat durch seine günstigen Eigenschaften breite Anwendung als Hochtemperaturwerkstoff gefunden. Die gute Oxidationsbeständigkeit wird dadurch gewährleistet, dass bei hohen Temperaturen eine langsam wachsende, schützende Aluminiumoxidschicht auf der NiAl-Oberfläche aufwächst. Von großer Bedeutung für die Anwendung dieses Systems sind die Haftungseigenschaften der Oxidschicht auf dem Metallsubstrat. Diese können durch Porenbildung auf der Metall/Oxid-Grenzfläche und Spannungen in der Oxidschicht, hervorgerufen durch Unterschiede in der thermischen Ausdehnung und Phasenumwandlungen, stark beeinträchtigt werden.
