Atomic vacancies in quasicrystals : a specific study with positrons and dilatometry

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden Messungen der Positronenlebensdauer, der Dopplerverbreiterung der 511 keV Positron-Elektron-Zerstrahlungslinie und der zeitdifferentiellen Dilatometrie an verschiedenen quasikristallinen Systemen und Approximanten durchgeführt. Der Schwerpunkt der Untersuchungen lag dabei auf dem ikosaedrischen Quasikristall des Al-Pd-Mn-Systems. Aus Messungen der Positronenlebensdauer bei Raumtemperatur für Al-basierte Quasikristalle und Approximanten unterschiedlicher Zusammensetzungen und Vorbehandlung konnte das Vorliegen struktureller Leerstellen mit einer Konzentration von C(V) größer 10(-4) gezeigt werden. Strukturelle Leerstellen konnten auch in den nicht Al-basierten Quasikristallen der Zn-Mg-RE-Systeme nachgewiesen werden. Messungen der Temperaturabhängigkeit der mittleren Positronenlebensdauer in i-Al-Pd-Mn ermöglichten eine direkte Beobachtung der Bildung und Wanderung thermischer Leerstellen im Quasikristall und durch die Anpassung mit einem einfachen 3-Zustandsmodell der Positronenlebensdauer in Abhängigkeit von der Temperatur konnten die Aktivierungsparameter für die Bildung und Wanderung, sowie die dazugehörigen Vorfaktoren, bestimmt werden. Alternativ dazu wurde die Leerstellenbildung zudem mit der Methode der zeitdifferentiellen Längenänderung nach schnellen Temperaturwechseln untersucht. Die dabei auftretende reversible Anomalie in der Längenänderung wird auf komplexe Ordnungs-Unordnungsübergänge zurückgeführt. Durch Messungen der Dopplerverbreiterung der 511 keV Zerstrahlungslinie der Positron-Elektron-Reaktion konnten Rückschlüsse auf die chemische Umgebung der Leerstelle in i-Al-Pd-Mn gewonnen werden. Die Umgebung der Leerstelle ist dabei von Aluminium dominiert.In this work measurements of the positron lifetime, the Doppler broadening of the 511 keV annihilation photon-line and time-differential dilatometry measurements were performed on quasicrystals and crystalline approximants. The main interest was within the icosahedral quasicrystal of the Al-Pd-Mn system. From measurements of the positron lifetime at ambient temperatures for aluminium based quasicrystals and approximants in dependence of composition and pre-treatment the existence of structural vacancies with a concentration range higher than CV higher than 10-4 could be deduced. In the non-aluminium based quasicrystal systems with Zn-Mg-RE (rare earth) compounds structural vacancies with a similar concentration range were detected too. Measurements of the temperature dependence of the mean positron lifetime in i-Al-Pd-Mn provided a direct insight into the formation and migration of thermal vacancies in the quasicrystal and with a simple 3-state trapping model of the positron lifetime in dependence of the temperature the activation parameters for the formation and the migration and the corresponding pre-factors could be derived. Alternatively the vacancy formation process was studied by the measurement of the time-differential length change after fast temperature changes. The reversible anomaly of the length change after fast cooling was ascribed to complex order-disordering phenomena. With the coincident measurement of the 511 keV photon line of the positron-electron annihilation some aspects of the chemical environment of the vacancy were investigated. In the i-Al-Pd-Mn quasicrystal the vacancy in the as-prepared state was clearly surrounded by aluminium atoms
