Die Tatsache, dass sich viele maligne Melanome resistent gegenüber dem tumorselektiven Liganden TRAIL (tumor necrosis-related apoptosis-inducing ligand) verhalten, erfordert erweiterte Ansätze in der Melanomtherapie. Durch die Untersuchungen, die mit 18 unterschiedlichen Melanomzelllinien durchgeführt wurden, konnte gezeigt werden, dass die TRAIL-Suszeptibilität unabhängig vom jeweiligen Tumorprogressionsstadium ist, und dass die Kostimulation mit einer sublethalen UVB-Dosis ubiquitär eine stark synergistisch sensibilisierende Auswirkung auf die TRAIL-resistenten Melanomzellen hat.
