Strokes in young adults

Los accidentes cerebrovasculares suponen una causa importante de morbimortalidad en los países occidentales. A pesar de que ocurren frecuentemente en pacientes de edad avanzada, hay estudios recientes que indican un aumento en la incidencia de ictus en adultos jóvenes. A los factores de riesgo típicos de los ACV en adultos, como hipertensión arterial, diabetes, hiperlipoproteinemia o fibrilación auricular, hay que sumarles otros trastornos que aumentan la probabilidad de esta patología en pacientes jóvenes. En la siguiente revisión se comentarán datos epidemiológicos, clínicos y fisiopatológicos de los accidentes cerebrovasculares, centrándonos en los que acontecen en población joven (considerada aproximadamente entre 15-55 años)Cerebrovascular accidents are an important cause of morbi-mortality in developed countries. Strokes usually involve the elderly, although recent studies have shown an increase in incidence of these events in young adults. The risk factors frequently associated to strokes in old patients are arterial hypertension, hyperlipoproteinemia, diabetes mellitus and atrial fibrillation. However, the proportion of these agents in the physiopathology of strokes in young people change, and other factors gain more weight.
