El cáncer de cérvix uterino supone la 3ª causa de muerte en mujeres a nivel mundial. Su historia natural es bien conocida, con un periodo de latencia amplio. Esto ha permitido desarrollar programas de cribado para realizar un tratamiento temprano, con la consiguiente mejora del pronóstico y disminución de la morbi-mortalidad asociada. El cribado del cáncer de cérvix está de actualidad debido a los avances en el conocimiento acerca de la etiología y desarrollo de las lesiones precursoras y del carcinoma de cuello uterino, y a las pruebas de detección secundaria, además de la vacunación.
