Thesis (Master's)--University of Washington, 2015Background: Uncontrolled hypertension leads to severe yet preventable outcomes including heart attack, stroke, and chronic kidney disease. Almost a third of the adults in the US have hypertension and only about half of them have their blood pressure (BP) under control. Although increases in public knowledge and awareness about hypertension have improved BP control rates, a better understanding of the hypertension beliefs among uncontrolled hypertensives is needed to create new behavioral interventions to further improve BP control.
