Thesis (Ph. D.)--University of Washington, 2005.How do genetic networks control the behavior of an organism? To approach this problem, I chose the model organism C. elegans, a simple metazoan that displays several easily observed behavioral programs such as locomotion, egg-laying, and defecation. C. elegans defecation is a rhythmic behavior regulated by the intestine, and consists of three muscle contractions occurring at regular intervals. My results suggest that chemosensation and external mechanosensation play no role in regulating the defecation cycle.
