Características y comportamientos de riesgo para el VIH de hombres que tienen sexo con hombres y trabajadoras sexuales en ocho ciudades del Ecuador

The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Ecuador is still situated in the concentrated state showing sero-prevalences in the general population of around 0.3 %. However, the segments of the population most affected by the virus, men who have sex with men (MSM) and female sex workers, exhibit sero-prevalences up to 27. 8 % and 2.1 %, respectively. Although there exists a broad understanding of the importance of these population segments in the continuous spreading and the generalization of HIV/AIDS, Ecuador is lacking exact data of the characteristics and the risk behavior of MSM and female sex workers on a national level. By analyzing 4943 “knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practices” (KABP) surveys carried out in the two population groups in eight cities of the country, the present thesis studies profoundly the features of MSM and female sex workers.La epidemia del VIH/SIDA en el Ecuador se encuentra todavía en un estado concentrado con seroprevalencias en la población general alrededor del 0,3 %. Sin embargo, en las poblaciones de mayor afectación, los hombres teniendo sexo con hombres (HSH) y las trabajadoras sexuales (TS), las seroprevalencias llegan hasta el 27,8 % y 2,1 %, respectivamente. Si bien se conoce el rol importante de estas poblaciones en la propagación continuada y la generalización del VIH/SIDA, no se cuenta con datos exactos de características y comportamientos de riesgo de HSH y TS a nivel nacional.
