The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Ecuador is still situated in the concentrated state showing sero-prevalences in the general population of around 0.3 %. However, the segments of the population most affected by the virus, men who have sex with men (MSM) and female sex workers, exhibit sero-prevalences up to 27. 8 % and 2.1 %, respectively. Although there exists a broad understanding of the importance of these population segments in the continuous spreading and the generalization of HIV/AIDS, Ecuador is lacking exact data of the characteristics and the risk behavior of MSM and female sex workers on a national level.
