El Islam político y el terrorismo en Medio Oriente

After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the attention of several countries – mainly Western – has focused on the Middle East, considering the region as the cradle of terrorism. The events that have taken place since that date onwards show a marked tendency toward the production of ideas that have demonized the region by creating a link between political Islam and terrorism, which have been inevitably influenced by media manipulation. Indeed, terrorism is used by various Islamic movements as a strategy to satisfy their own purposes; nonetheless, it‟s not appropriate to establish a generalization that embraces all of these associations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to demonstrate that there is no direct relationship between political Islam and terrorism, and that this misconception is based on some ideas sustained by the West in particular and evoked as part of numerous states‟ discourse with the desire of maintaining the international system‟s security. Everything that has been stated will be explained through a social constructivist approach that will help understand how identities, interests and norms, along with the power of discourse and language, are created over time, and how they have affected the way the Middle East has been perceived.Después de los ataques terroristas del 11 de Septiembre de 2001, la atención de muchos países – mayormente occidentales – se ha enfocado en el Medio Oriente, considerándolo como la cuna del terrorismo. Los eventos que han ocurrido de esa fecha en adelante muestran una marcada tendencia hacia la producción de ideas que han satanizado a la región al crear un vínculo entre el Islam político y el terrorismo, influenciadas inevitablemente por la manipulación de los medios de comunicación. El terrorismo es, en efecto, utilizado por una serie de movimientos islámicos como estrategia para satisfacer sus propósitos; sin embargo, no es apropiado establecer una generalización que abarque a todas estas asociaciones. Es por este motivo que el presente estudio tiene como propósito intentar demostrar que no existe una relación directa entre el Islam político y el terrorismo y que esta concepción errónea está fundada en ciertas ideas sostenidas por Occidente en particular y evocadas como parte del discurso de varios Estados con el afán de mantener la seguridad del sistema internacional. Esto será explicado a través del constructivismo social que ayudará a comprender cómo identidades, intereses y normas, junto con el poder del discurso y el lenguaje, se crean a través del tiempo y la forma en la que han afectado la concepción sobre Medio Oriente
