The guava tree, Psidium guajava, is considered an invasive species in the Galapagos Islands. This species was introduced in 1869 and it is estimated that it has invaded more than 40.000 ha, including most of the highlands of San Cristobal and some areas of the two volcanoes South of Isabela (Cerro Azul and Sierra Negra). Guava trees are able to overcome nutrient - poor and compacted soils, to resist trampling, and to survive to chemical and mechanical control. Guava seeds are dispersed by birds, cattle and other mammals, including humans. However, there is little knowledge about the relative importance of such dispersal agents and their effects on seed germination.
