POLITENESS STRATEGIES EMPLOYED BY THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE JORDAN PETERSON DESTROYS Q&A YOUTUBE PROGRAM

This research aimed to find out politeness strategies employed by the participants of Jordan Peterson Destroys Q&A YouTube Program and the situational contexts in which politeness strategies employed by the participants. This research was a descriptive quantitative. The subject of this research was Jordan Peterson Destroys Question and Answer Program in live streaming YouTube from Melbourne. The data were collected from the script document of Jordan Peterson Destroys Q&A in YouTube. The researcher analyzed the data by applying the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987). The instrument of this research was observation checklist. The result of this study showed that there were four types of politeness strategies employed by the characters in Jordan Peterson Destroys Q&A on YouTube namely Bald-on record, Positive politeness, Negative politeness, and Off-record strategy. It was also found the situational context used by the characters. In conclusion, among the four strategies, the positive politeness strategy was the most frequent strategy that occurred 68 times out of 106 total data. The speakers used situational context based on their role and profession in society. It is suggested that the next researcher can conduct a further study about other pragmatic elements that are not discussed in this study so that readers can get plenty of references about politeness strategies.
