Due to their high biocompatibility, macroscale hydrogels have been studied as promising materials for the design of drug delivery systems (DDS). Such systems devoted to the local administration and prolonged drug release can improve the efficacy of pharmaceutical coumpounds while limiting undesired side-effects. Hydrogels present a high water content and soft consistency with mechanical properties that can match those of biological tissues. Nevertheless, these systems are essentially limited to the delivery of hydrophilic drugs.
