This thesis analyzes how Velleius Paterculus, historian of the first imperial age, considers the transition from the Roman Republic to Augustus' Imperium. In particular, we focus on the presentation of the civil wars of the first century B.C. and of the key personalities that played a prominent role in them, namely Pompeius, Caesar, Marcus Antonius and Augustus
