This thesis focuses on hierarchical real-time systems where a number of separate applications reside on a single processor. In our work we present new approaches to manage shared resources in hierarchical systems in order to facilitate modern software development processes, where subsystems are developed by independent teams and at a later stage integrated into a single product. These novel approaches have been evaluated through simulation results comparing them with other existing mechanisms. \noindent In addition we have developed an implementation of a two-level hierarchical system using our novel approaches to manage shared resources in ERIKA Enterprise, an open-source real-time kernel for embedded systems
