Symbols and abbreviations are commonplace in mathematics text. In this article the use of mathematical symbols and abbreviations is discussed with reference to examples from recent NAPLAN tests. The article draws the reader’s attention to the large variety of symbols and abbreviations used, with particular focus on primary years. Thereafter, the difficulties which learners may experience because of this unique and complex part of the mathematics register are discussed. Knowledge of the complexities which symbols and abbreviations introduce into mathematics can enable a teacher to pre-empt misunderstandings and aid learners in this area of mathematics
